You're New to Cannabis. That's OK.
Cottonmouth Dispensary built this beginner's guide for adults who have never purchased cannabis from a dispensary — or never used cannabis at all. No assumptions about what you already know. No jargon without explanation. Just a straightforward walkthrough of everything a first-time buyer needs to understand, from the legal basics to your first purchase.
Millions of adults in New Jersey are buying legal cannabis for the first time. You're not behind. You're right on time.
Cannabis Is Legal in New Jersey
New Jersey legalized recreational cannabis for adults 21 and older in 2021. That means you can legally purchase, possess, and consume cannabis products from a licensed dispensary without a medical card. Here's what the law allows:
- Purchase limit: Up to 1 ounce of flower (or equivalent in other products) per transaction
- Age requirement: 21+ with valid government-issued photo ID
- Where you can buy: Only from licensed NJ dispensaries (not gas stations, bodegas, or delivery services operating without a license)
- Where you can consume: On private property. Cannabis cannot be consumed in public spaces, in vehicles, or in federal buildings. Some municipalities have designated consumption areas.
- Driving: It is illegal to drive under the influence of cannabis. DUI laws apply.
Cottonmouth Dispensary holds NJ Class 5 Retail Cannabis License #RE000055. Everything we sell is tested, tracked, and fully legal.
Product Types at a Glance
Cannabis comes in many forms. Here's a quick overview of what you'll find at a dispensary:
Flower
Dried cannabis bud. Smoke it in a pipe, bong, or rolled joint. Fast onset (1-5 min), lasts 1-3 hours. The classic.
Pre-Rolls
Pre-made joints. Ready to smoke, no equipment needed. The easiest entry point for smoking.
Edibles
Gummies, chocolates, beverages. Takes 30 min-2 hrs to feel. Lasts 4-8 hours. Start with 2.5-5mg.
Vaporizers
Disposable pens or cartridges. Vapor, not smoke. Fast onset, portable, minimal odor.
Tinctures
Liquid drops under your tongue. Precise dosing, no smoke, no odor. Great for medical use.
Topicals
Creams and balms for your skin. Localized pain relief. No high (in most cases).

Dosing — Start Low, Go Slow
This is the single most important piece of advice for new cannabis users: start with a low dose and wait before taking more. Cannabis affects everyone differently based on body weight, tolerance, metabolism, and the product type.
Beginner Dosing Guidelines
- Edibles: Start with 2.5mg THC. Wait at least 2 full hours before considering a second dose. Many beginners find 5mg is plenty.
- Flower / Pre-Rolls: Take one small puff. Wait 10-15 minutes. Effects come on quickly, so you'll know how you feel before deciding whether to take more.
- Vaporizers: Same as flower — one small puff, wait 10-15 minutes.
- Tinctures: Start with 2.5mg (usually a few drops, depending on concentration). Wait 30-60 minutes for sublingual, or 1-2 hours if swallowed.
You can always take more. You can't take less. This isn't a race — find the dose that works for you over multiple sessions.

What Cannabis Feels Like
Everyone's experience is slightly different, but here are common effects reported by cannabis users:
- Relaxation. Most people feel a sense of physical and mental ease. Tension in your shoulders might soften. Your mind might slow down in a pleasant way.
- Euphoria. Many users feel happy, giggly, or content. This is the "high" people talk about.
- Enhanced senses. Music might sound better. Food might taste amazing. Colors might seem more vivid.
- Altered time perception. Minutes can feel longer. This is normal and temporary.
- Increased appetite. The "munchies" are real. Have snacks ready.
- Dry mouth. Cannabis reduces saliva production. Keep water nearby. (Yes, this is where our name comes from.)
Less common but possible, especially with higher doses: anxiety, paranoia, dizziness, or nausea. These effects are almost always dose-related — which is why starting low is so important. If you feel uncomfortable, find a calm space, drink water, and remember: it will pass. Cannabis effects are temporary.
Your First Dispensary Visit
Walking into a dispensary for the first time can feel unfamiliar, but the experience is designed to be welcoming. Here's exactly what happens at Cottonmouth:
- Arrive and park. We have 72 free parking spaces. Walk to the front entrance.
- Check in. A greeter at the front desk will scan your government-issued photo ID to verify you're 21+. This takes about 30 seconds. Your information is not stored or shared.
- Browse. Walk the showroom floor. All products are displayed with clear labels showing strain name, THC/CBD percentages, weight, and price.
- Ask for help. Our budtenders are trained to help beginners. Tell them: "This is my first time" and they'll walk you through everything. There are no dumb questions.
- Watch glass art (optional). Our in-house flameworking studio is right on the sales floor. You might catch an artist creating a piece in real time.
- Check out. Pay with cash at the register. ATMs are on-site. First-time customers automatically receive a first-visit discount.
- Leave with your purchase. Products are placed in a sealed, opaque exit bag per NJ law.
Average visit time: 10-15 minutes. No appointment needed. No pressure to buy anything.
Things New Users Should Know
- You don't need a medical card to buy cannabis in NJ. Recreational (adult-use) is fully legal for 21+.
- Bring cash. Cottonmouth is a cash-only facility. We have 2 ATMs on-site.
- Cannabis is not one-size-fits-all. What works for your friend may not work for you. Start low, try different products, and find what suits your body and goals.
- Don't drive after consuming. Plan ahead. Have a designated driver, use a rideshare, or consume at home.
- Store cannabis safely. Keep it in a cool, dark place, away from children and pets. Sealed containers are best.
- Effects vary by method. Smoking hits in minutes and fades in hours. Edibles take longer to kick in but last much longer. Don't mix methods on your first time.
- Hydrate. Drink water before, during, and after. Dry mouth and mild dehydration are common.
- You'll save money. First-time customers get a first-visit discount, and we offer permanent discounts for veterans, seniors, medical patients, and more. See all discounts.
Indica, Sativa, and Hybrid — What Do They Mean?
You'll see these three terms on nearly every cannabis product label. Here's the traditional breakdown:
- Indica: Associated with relaxation, body effects, and sleep. Often recommended for nighttime use.
- Sativa: Associated with energy, creativity, and cerebral effects. Often recommended for daytime use.
- Hybrid: A cross between indica and sativa genetics. Effects vary depending on the specific strain.
In reality, the distinction between indica and sativa is more nuanced than "relaxing vs. energizing." The specific terpene profile and cannabinoid content of each strain matter more than the category label. But for beginners, these labels are a useful starting point for communicating what kind of experience you're looking for.
Tell your budtender: "I want something relaxing" or "I want something for daytime focus" and they'll steer you in the right direction regardless of the label.
