What Are Cannabis Concentrates?

Cannabis concentrates are products made by extracting the most desirable compounds from the cannabis plant, primarily cannabinoids (THC, CBD) and terpenes, while removing excess plant material. The result is a product that is significantly more potent than flower. Where flower typically ranges from 15-35% THC, concentrates regularly test between 60-90%+ THC.

Concentrates come in many forms, each with a different texture, consistency, and production method. What they share is intensity. A single dab of concentrate can deliver as much THC as an entire joint of flower. This makes concentrates a category that demands respect, proper equipment, and experience before diving in.

Types of Concentrates

Wax

A soft, opaque concentrate with a waxy, pliable texture. Wax is easy to handle with a dab tool and is one of the most common concentrate types. THC content typically ranges from 60-80%. Wax is a good entry point for those transitioning from flower to concentrates.

Shatter

A translucent, glass-like concentrate that "shatters" when broken. Shatter is known for its high purity and clean appearance. It typically contains 70-85% THC and has a stable structure that makes it easy to store. It can be harder to dose precisely because it must be broken into small pieces.

Budder / Badder

A creamy, butter-like concentrate that is whipped during processing. Budder has a smooth consistency that is easy to scoop and apply to a dab tool. It retains more terpenes than shatter, often delivering a more flavorful experience. THC ranges from 65-85%.

Live Resin

Made from fresh-frozen cannabis plants (frozen immediately after harvest, rather than dried and cured). This preserves the full terpene profile of the living plant, resulting in exceptional flavor and aroma. Live resin is considered a premium product and is highly sought after by connoisseurs. THC typically ranges from 65-85%.

Live Rosin

A solventless concentrate made by applying heat and pressure to fresh-frozen cannabis or ice water hash. Because no chemical solvents are used, live rosin is considered the cleanest and most natural form of concentrate. It is also the most expensive. THC ranges from 60-80%, but the terpene preservation is unmatched.

Diamonds (THCa Crystalline)

Pure THCa crystals that look like small, clear or amber gems. Diamonds are the most potent form of concentrate, often testing at 90-99% THCa. They are typically paired with terpene sauce for flavor, as pure diamonds on their own have minimal taste. This is the pinnacle of concentrate potency.

Hash (Traditional and Bubble Hash)

One of the oldest forms of cannabis concentrate. Traditional hash is made by collecting and pressing trichomes (kief) into a solid block. Bubble hash uses ice water to separate trichomes from plant material. Hash is less potent than modern extracts (typically 40-65% THC) but is valued for its full-spectrum character and historical significance.

Extraction Methods

Hydrocarbon Extraction (BHO/PHO)

Uses butane (BHO) or propane (PHO) as solvents to strip cannabinoids and terpenes from plant material. This is the most common commercial extraction method. When performed properly in a licensed facility, all residual solvents are purged to safe levels verified by lab testing. Produces wax, shatter, budder, and live resin.

CO2 Extraction

Uses supercritical carbon dioxide as a solvent. CO2 extraction is considered one of the cleanest methods and is commonly used for vape cartridges and edible oils. It produces a less terpene-rich product compared to hydrocarbon extraction but leaves zero residual solvents.

Solventless Extraction

No chemical solvents are used. Includes rosin pressing (heat and pressure), ice water extraction (bubble hash), and dry sifting (kief collection). Solventless products are considered the purest and most natural concentrates available. They command a premium price.

How to Consume Concentrates

Dab Rig

A glass water pipe with a heated nail or banger (typically quartz, titanium, or ceramic). You heat the nail with a torch, let it cool to the desired temperature, apply a small amount of concentrate, and inhale the resulting vapor through the water. This is the traditional and most popular method.

E-Nail / E-Rig

An electronic version of the dab rig that maintains a consistent temperature without a torch. E-rigs like the Puffco Peak offer precise temperature control and eliminate the safety concerns of open flame torches. They are more expensive upfront but offer a superior and more repeatable experience.

Portable Vaporizer

Concentrate-compatible portable vaporizers heat concentrates at controlled temperatures. They offer convenience and portability at the cost of vapor production compared to a full dab rig.

Flower Topping

You can add a small amount of concentrate on top of a bowl of flower or inside a joint. This increases potency without requiring a dab rig. It is a good way to experiment with concentrates if you do not own dabbing equipment. Use a very small amount, as the potency increase is dramatic.

Temperature and Its Effects

The temperature at which you vaporize a concentrate dramatically affects the experience:

• Low temperature (315-450F): Emphasizes flavor and terpene expression. Produces smoother, less harsh vapor. Lower vapor production. Ideal for savoring live resin and rosin.
• High temperature (450-600F): Maximizes vapor production and delivers stronger, more immediate effects. Sacrifices some flavor as terpenes degrade at higher heat. Harsher on the throat and lungs.

Most experienced concentrate consumers settle somewhere in the 450-550F range for a balance of flavor and effect. If you are using a torch and dab rig without temperature control, heat the banger until it glows, then wait 30-60 seconds before dabbing to reach an appropriate temperature.

Equipment Essentials

• Dab rig or e-rig: The base unit for consumption
• Quartz banger or nail: The heated surface where concentrate is applied
• Butane torch (for traditional rigs): Used to heat the banger
• Dab tool: A small metal or glass tool for handling concentrate
• Carb cap: Placed over the banger to restrict airflow and lower effective vaporization temperature
• Cotton swabs and isopropyl alcohol: For cleaning the banger between dabs to maintain flavor purity

Cost Per Use: Concentrates vs. Flower

Concentrates have a higher upfront price per gram than flower, but because they are so much more potent, the cost per dose can be comparable or even lower. A single gram of concentrate contains roughly the equivalent THC of 3-5 grams of high-quality flower. For heavy consumers, concentrates can actually be more economical over time.

However, the equipment investment (dab rig, torch, tools) adds to the initial cost. E-rigs range from $100-400. A basic torch-and-glass setup can be assembled for $50-100.

A Note for Beginners

Concentrates are not recommended for people who are new to cannabis. The potency is extreme, the onset is near-instantaneous, and the effects can be overwhelming if you are not prepared. Build your tolerance with flower or low-dose vape cartridges first. When you are ready, start with the smallest possible dab (a rice-grain-sized amount) and wait 10-15 minutes before considering more.
