Cottonmouth Dispensary hears the same questions every day from first-time visitors, long-time consumers, and curious neighbors. Here are honest, detailed answers organized by topic. Click any question to expand the answer.
Legal Questions
Yes. New Jersey voters approved recreational cannabis legalization in November 2020, and retail sales began in April 2022. The Cannabis Regulatory Commission (CRC) oversees all licensing, testing, and regulation. Cottonmouth Dispensary holds a Class 5 Retail Cannabis License (#RE000055), meaning every product we sell has been cultivated, processed, and tested by licensed NJ operators.
No. New Jersey allows recreational (adult-use) cannabis purchases for anyone 21 or older with a valid government-issued ID. A medical cannabis card is optional and provides certain benefits like higher possession limits and potential tax advantages, but it is not required to shop at Cottonmouth.
We accept any valid, non-expired government-issued photo ID: driver's license, state-issued ID card, United States passport, or military ID. The ID must show you are 21 years of age or older. We check every customer, every time, no exceptions.
No. Transporting cannabis across state lines is a federal offense, regardless of whether both states have legalized it. Cannabis purchased in New Jersey must stay in New Jersey. This includes driving into Pennsylvania, Delaware, or any other state.
Cannabis can be consumed in private residences. Public consumption (streets, parks, beaches, restaurants) is prohibited. Landlords and property managers may also restrict cannabis use on their properties. Some municipalities have established designated consumption areas, but these are not yet widespread.
New Jersey law allows adults 21+ to purchase up to 1 ounce (28.35 grams) of cannabis flower or its equivalent in other product forms per transaction. Equivalencies vary by product type. Your budtender can help you understand the limits for specific product combinations.
New Jersey's Cannabis Regulatory, Enforcement Assistance, and Marketplace Modernization Act (CREAMMA) includes employment protections that prevent employers from taking adverse action against employees solely for cannabis use outside of work. However, employer drug-free workplace policies may still apply, and certain safety-sensitive positions have different rules. Federal employees and contractors are still subject to federal drug policies. If you have concerns, consult your employer's policy or an employment attorney.
Product Questions
Cottonmouth carries seven main product categories: flower (dried bud), pre-rolls (ready-made joints), edibles (gummies, chocolates, beverages), concentrates (wax, shatter, live resin), vaporizers (cartridges and disposable pens), tinctures (liquid drops), and topicals (creams, balms, patches). Each works differently. Our Products Guide covers them all in detail.
THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the primary psychoactive compound in cannabis — it produces the "high." CBD (cannabidiol) is non-psychoactive and does not produce a high. CBD may help moderate the intensity of THC and has been studied for potential benefits related to anxiety, inflammation, and seizures. Many products contain both in various ratios. Read our CBD vs. THC guide for the full breakdown.
Terpenes are aromatic compounds produced by cannabis (and thousands of other plants) that create the smell and flavor of different strains. More importantly, they significantly influence the effects. Myrcene promotes relaxation, limonene elevates mood, pinene supports alertness. Terpene profiles are a better predictor of how a strain will make you feel than the indica/sativa label. Read our Terpenes Guide for details on all major terpenes.
Not necessarily. THC percentage is one factor, but terpenes, minor cannabinoids, growing conditions, cure quality, and your individual biology all shape the experience. A 20% THC strain with a rich terpene profile can produce a more enjoyable and nuanced experience than a 30% THC strain with a flat terpene profile. Don't chase numbers. Ask your budtender about the full picture.
The entourage effect is the theory that cannabis compounds (cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids) work together synergistically to produce effects greater than any single compound alone. This is why full-spectrum products (which contain the complete range of plant compounds) often feel different than isolates (which contain only one compound like pure THC or pure CBD).
Yes, in a specific way. When you eat an edible, your liver converts THC into 11-hydroxy-THC, a metabolite that crosses the blood-brain barrier more efficiently and produces more intense, longer-lasting effects. A 10mg edible can feel significantly stronger than smoking an equivalent amount of THC. Edibles also take 30 minutes to 2 hours to kick in and last 4-8 hours. This is why dosing carefully with edibles is critical. Read our Edibles Guide for detailed dosing recommendations.
A pre-roll is a pre-made joint, ready to smoke out of the package. No grinding, rolling, or equipment needed. They come in standard versions (flower only) and infused versions (coated in concentrate and/or kief for extra potency). Pre-rolls are the easiest entry point for smoking cannabis. Read our Pre-Rolls Guide for more.
Dosing Questions
For edibles: start with 2.5 to 5mg of THC. For flower: take one small puff, wait 10-15 minutes, and assess before taking more. The golden rule is "start low, go slow." You can always take more; you cannot take less. Our Dosing Guide has product-specific recommendations for beginners, intermediate, and experienced users.
It depends on the consumption method. Smoking/vaping: 1-5 minutes. Tinctures (sublingual): 15-45 minutes. Edibles: 30 minutes to 2 hours. The most common mistake with edibles is not waiting long enough and taking a second dose before the first one hits. Be patient.
Stay calm. Remember that no one has ever fatally overdosed on cannabis. Find a comfortable, safe place. Drink water. Eat something light. Focus on slow, deep breathing. The feeling will pass, usually within 1-3 hours for inhalation and may take longer for edibles. If you experience severe distress, chest pain, or are unable to calm down, call 911. They are there to help, not to arrest you.
Yes. Regular cannabis use leads to tolerance as CB1 receptors downregulate in response to repeated THC exposure. This means you need more to achieve the same effects over time. A tolerance break (T-break) of 2 to 4 weeks allows CB1 receptors to return to baseline. Even a 48-hour break can produce noticeable results.
Microdosing is consuming very small amounts of cannabis, typically 1 to 2.5mg of THC, to achieve subtle, sub-perceptual effects without a pronounced high. Many people microdose for mild mood elevation, focus, or stress reduction while maintaining full functionality throughout their day. Tinctures and low-dose edibles are the most popular microdosing formats.
Medical Questions
Many people report significant relief from chronic pain with cannabis, and chronic pain is one of the most common reasons people use medical cannabis. Research supports cannabinoids' interaction with pain-signaling pathways. However, results vary by individual, and cannabis is not a replacement for professional medical care. Read our Cannabis for Chronic Pain guide for detailed information.
It's dose-dependent. Low doses of THC (especially combined with CBD) and strains high in linalool or limonene terpenes may help reduce anxiety. However, high doses of THC can actually increase anxiety and paranoia, especially in people prone to anxiety disorders. Start low, use CBD-inclusive products, and avoid high-THC strains until you understand your response. Read our Cannabis for Anxiety guide.
Cannabis interacts with the CYP450 enzyme system in your liver, which is the same system that metabolizes many prescription medications. This means cannabis can potentially increase or decrease the effectiveness of certain drugs, including blood thinners, anti-seizure medications, and some antidepressants. Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before combining cannabis with prescription medications. Read our Drug Interactions guide for more details.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) both advise against cannabis use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. THC crosses the placenta and is present in breast milk. While research is ongoing, the current medical consensus is that the potential risks outweigh any perceived benefits. Read our Cannabis and Pregnancy guide for the full picture.
New Jersey's medical cannabis program covers a wide range of conditions including chronic pain, anxiety, PTSD, epilepsy/seizure disorders, cancer, multiple sclerosis, Crohn's disease, migraines, and many others. A licensed NJ physician can evaluate your condition and provide a recommendation. Visit our Medical Cannabis Guide for the full list and application process.

Safety Questions
No. Driving under the influence of cannabis is illegal in New Jersey and impairs reaction time, coordination, and judgment. Wait at least 4-6 hours after smoking or vaping, and 8 or more hours after consuming edibles, before driving. If you are unsure whether you are impaired, do not drive. Use a rideshare service or designate a sober driver.
Detection windows depend on the testing method and frequency of use. Urine: 3-30 days (casual users 3-7 days, daily users up to 30+ days). Blood: 1-2 days. Saliva: 24-72 hours. Hair: up to 90 days. THC metabolites are fat-soluble and accumulate in body fat, which is why heavy users test positive for longer periods.
Cannabis Use Disorder (CUD) affects approximately 9% of people who use cannabis, according to NIDA (National Institute on Drug Abuse). For comparison, alcohol dependence affects about 15% of drinkers, and nicotine dependence affects about 32% of tobacco users. CUD is characterized by continued use despite negative consequences, inability to cut back, and withdrawal symptoms (irritability, sleep disruption, appetite changes). Risk is higher for people who start using before age 18 or use daily.
Store cannabis in a cool, dark, airtight container. UV light, heat, oxygen, and moisture are the four enemies of cannabis freshness. Glass jars with airtight seals work best for flower. Keep edibles in original packaging. Store concentrates in glass containers. Keep everything away from children and pets in a secure, child-resistant container. Our Storage Guide covers every product type in detail.
Under normal ventilation conditions, secondhand cannabis smoke exposure is unlikely to produce noticeable effects or a positive drug test. A 2015 Johns Hopkins University study found that extreme exposure in an unventilated room could produce trace amounts of THC in non-smokers' blood, but real-world conditions with normal ventilation result in minimal exposure. That said, be considerate of others, especially children and people who have opted not to use cannabis.
