How to Read a New Jersey Cannabis Package & Label

Reading a New Jersey cannabis label ensures you know exactly what you are purchasing. Learn how to decode cannabinoid potency, serving sizes, batch COA testing, and state warnings.

Anatomy of an NJ-CRC Compliant Label

Every licensed adult-use product sold at Cottonmouth Dispensary must meet strict labeling requirements mandated by N.J.A.C. 17:30.

🏷️

1. Product Identity & Quantity

Specifies product strain name, classification (Indica, Sativa, Hybrid), net weight (e.g., 3.5g / 1/8 oz flower), cultivator business name, and NJ license number.

🧬

2. Cannabinoids & Potency

Lists active THCA %, Delta-9 THC %, CBD %, CBG %, and Total THC calculation. For edibles, it displays exact milligrams per serving and total package mg.

🔬

3. Lab Test & Batch Data

Displays batch/lot number, harvest/production date, testing lab name, lab pass status (heavy metals, pesticides, microbials), and a QR code to the COA.

⚠️ Important Rule: Milligrams (mg) vs. Percentages (%)

Never confuse milligrams with percentages! A package containing 100mg of THC in a 50-gram gummy container is 0.2% THC by weight, not 100% THC. Displaying total milligrams as a THC percentage is mathematically incorrect and misleading.

Correct Labeling Example (Edible)Serving Size: 1 Gummy (10mg THC) • Total Package: 10 Gummies (100mg THC total). Net Weight: 50g.
Incorrect Labeling ErrorClaiming a product has "100% THC" when referring to 100mg total package dosage.

Questions You Can Ask Our Budtenders

Our budtenders can explain package labels and terpene profiles without offering medical advice:

  • "What is the total cannabinoid percentage versus Delta-9 THC?"
  • "Which terpenes (Myrcene, Limonene, Caryophyllene) are dominant in this batch?"
  • "How many milligrams of THC are in a single recommended serving?"
  • "When was this batch harvested, tested, and packaged?"

Label Reading FAQ

THCA is the non-psychoactive acid form present in raw flower. When heated (decarboxylated), THCA converts into active Delta-9 THC. NJ labels calculate Total THC as: Delta-9 THC + (THCA × 0.877).

Edibles specify exact serving dosages (e.g., 10mg THC per gummy, 100mg per package). Flower and concentrates state cannabinoid potency as a percentage of overall product mass.

Milligrams measure absolute mass of cannabinoids, whereas percentage measures concentration relative to total weight. A 100mg edible in a 50g package is 0.2% THC by weight, not 100% THC! Displaying total mg as % is mathematically incorrect.

All compliant New Jersey adult-use packages feature the official NJ CRC universal warning symbol (a yellow diamond containing a black cannabis leaf and exclamation mark) indicating the product contains cannabis.

Every package carries a batch/lot number and a QR code linking directly to the Certificate of Analysis (COA) issued by an independent ISO-accredited testing laboratory.
