Cannabis Dosing: How Much to Take, by Product Type and Experience Level

Cottonmouth Dispensary's dosing guide: your body is the variable. This framework helps you find your answer through experience.

Your Body Is the Variable

Cannabis dosing is personal, and no universal chart can predict exactly how a given dose will affect you. Body weight, metabolism, endocannabinoid system sensitivity, tolerance level, what you have eaten, your hydration, your mood, and even your genetics all influence the experience. Two people can take the same dose and have very different reactions.

This is why the cannabis industry has adopted a universal mantra: start low, go slow. Take less than you think you need, wait the appropriate amount of time for that product type, assess how you feel, and adjust from there. It is always easier to take more next time than to deal with taking too much this time.

The Start Low, Go Slow Framework

  • Start with the lowest recommended dose for your chosen product type.
  • Wait the full onset window before considering more (5-10 minutes for inhalation, 2 hours for edibles, 30-45 minutes for tinctures).
  • Assess how you feel honestly. If comfortable and wanting more, increase slightly next session.
  • Increase in small increments. For edibles: 2.5mg steps. For flower: one additional inhalation. For tinctures: 2.5mg more.
  • Keep a dosing journal. Note the product, dose, time, and effects. This builds your personal reference over time.

Dosing by Product Type

Flower (Smoked or Vaporized)

Flower is dosed by the number of inhalations rather than milligrams, because the amount of THC delivered per puff varies by strain, combustion method, and inhalation depth.

  • First-timer: 1-2 small inhalations from a 15-20% THC strain. Wait 10 minutes. Most first-timers will feel noticeable effects from this amount.
  • Occasional user: 2-4 inhalations. You know your general sensitivity and can adjust based on past experience.
  • Regular user: 4-8+ inhalations or a full session. Tolerance has been established.

Tips: Inhale slowly and gently. Deep lung-busting hits are not necessary and are harder on your respiratory system. A moderate draw held for 2-3 seconds delivers plenty of THC. Holding smoke longer does not increase absorption significantly. For details on selecting flower, visit our Flower Guide.

Edibles

Edibles are measured in milligrams of THC per serving. This is the product type where dosing discipline matters most, because onset is slow and overconsumption is the most common mistake.

  • First-timer: 2.5mg THC. This is a microdose to low dose. It may produce subtle effects or nothing at all. That is fine. It establishes your baseline.
  • Low tolerance: 5mg THC. The standard beginner dose. Mild euphoria, light relaxation.
  • Moderate tolerance: 10-15mg THC. Noticeable euphoria and body effects.
  • High tolerance: 20-50mg THC. For experienced consumers only.

Wait at least 2 hours before taking more. This cannot be overstated. For complete edible information, see our Edibles Guide.

Tinctures (Sublingual)

Tinctures are measured in milligrams per dropper. Check the label for the mg/mL concentration.

  • Starting dose: 2.5-5mg THC (typically half a dropper or less, depending on concentration).
  • Hold under tongue 30-60 seconds before swallowing for sublingual absorption.
  • Wait 30-45 minutes for effects to develop before considering a second dose.
  • Increase by 2.5mg increments over subsequent sessions.

Tinctures offer the most precise dosing of any product type. Use them to dial in your exact optimal dose. Learn more in our Tinctures Guide.

Concentrates (Dabbing)

Concentrates are extremely potent (60-90%+ THC) and are not recommended for beginners under any circumstances.

  • Starting dose (experienced consumers only): A rice-grain-sized amount. This is smaller than most people expect.
  • Wait 10-15 minutes to assess effects before considering another dab.
  • One small dab can equal an entire joint in terms of THC delivery. Respect the potency.

If you are curious about concentrates, read our Concentrates Guide before purchasing.

Topicals

Topicals do not produce systemic effects (except transdermal patches), so traditional dosing concerns do not apply.

  • Apply liberally to the affected area. A thin layer may not deliver sufficient cannabinoids.
  • Reapply every 2-4 hours as needed.
  • Transdermal patches deliver THC systemically. Follow the manufacturer's dosing instructions and treat them like edibles in terms of impairment potential.

Microdosing

Microdosing is the practice of consuming very small amounts of cannabis, typically 1-2.5mg THC, to achieve sub-perceptual or barely perceptual effects. The goal is not to feel "high" but to experience subtle mood enhancement, mild anxiety reduction, or gentle physical relaxation without impairment.

Microdosing is popular among people who want cannabis benefits during their workday, social situations, or daily routines without cognitive disruption. Tinctures and low-dose mints are the most popular products for microdosing because they allow precise measurement of very small amounts.

To start microdosing: begin with 1mg THC, take it at the same time each day for three days, and assess. If you feel nothing, increase to 1.5mg. Continue in 0.5mg increments until you find the threshold where you notice a subtle shift. That is your microdose. At Cottonmouth Dispensary, our budtenders can recommend the best microdosing products we carry.

Tolerance and T-Breaks

With regular cannabis use, your body's CB1 receptors become desensitized, requiring more cannabis to achieve the same effects. This is tolerance, and it happens to everyone who consumes cannabis frequently.

A tolerance break (T-break) is a period of abstinence that allows your cannabinoid receptors to resensitize. Research suggests that CB1 receptor availability begins recovering within 48 hours of cessation and returns to baseline levels within approximately 4 weeks.

  • Mini T-break (48-72 hours): Noticeable sensitivity increase. A good option for weekly reset.
  • Moderate T-break (1-2 weeks): Significant sensitivity recovery. Effects will feel substantially stronger when you resume.
  • Full T-break (3-4 weeks): Near-complete receptor resensitization. You will respond almost like a new consumer. Restart dosing from the bottom.

After any T-break, return to beginner-level dosing. Your tolerance has dropped, and your previous dose may now be too much.

When to Talk to Your Doctor

Cannabis interacts with your body through the endocannabinoid system and is processed by the liver's CYP450 enzyme system. If any of the following apply to you, consult a healthcare provider before using cannabis:

  • You take CYP450-metabolized medications: Blood thinners, anti-seizure drugs, certain heart medications, immunosuppressants, or some antidepressants. Cannabis can alter how these medications are processed.
  • Cardiovascular conditions: Cannabis can temporarily increase heart rate and alter blood pressure. If you have heart disease, arrhythmia, or a history of stroke, medical guidance is important.
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding: Cannabis use during pregnancy is associated with potential developmental risks. Medical organizations uniformly advise against it.
  • History of psychotic disorders: THC can exacerbate symptoms of schizophrenia and certain psychotic conditions. This is a serious contraindication.
  • You are under 25: While the legal age is 21, the brain continues developing until approximately age 25. Heavy cannabis use during this period may affect cognitive development.

This product contains cannabis. For use only by adults 21 and older. Keep out of reach of children. Cannabis can impair concentration, coordination, and judgment. Do not operate a vehicle or machinery under the influence of cannabis.
