Your Body Already Makes Cannabinoids
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a biological system inside your body designed to interact with cannabinoid compounds, and it exists before you ever touch the cannabis plant. Researchers discovered the ECS in the early 1990s while studying how THC affects the brain.
The endocannabinoid system exists in every mammal. It regulates a wide range of biological functions: mood, appetite, sleep, pain perception, immune response, memory, and inflammation. It does this through three components:
- Endocannabinoids: Cannabinoid compounds your body produces naturally. The two primary ones are anandamide (named from the Sanskrit word for "bliss") and 2-AG (2-arachidonoylglycerol). These molecules are structurally similar to the cannabinoids found in cannabis.
- Receptors: Protein structures on cell surfaces that endocannabinoids bind to, triggering biological responses. CB1 receptors are concentrated in the brain and central nervous system, influencing mood, pain, appetite, and cognition. CB2 receptors are found primarily in the immune system and peripheral tissues, influencing inflammation and immune response.
- Enzymes: Proteins that break down endocannabinoids after they've done their job, primarily FAAH (which breaks down anandamide) and MAGL (which breaks down 2-AG).
When you consume cannabis, the plant's cannabinoids interact with this existing system. THC binds directly to CB1 receptors in the brain, which is why it produces psychoactive effects. CBD interacts with the system differently, influencing receptor activity without binding directly, which is why it doesn't produce a "high." Understanding the ECS is the foundation for understanding everything else about cannabis.
Major Cannabinoids Explained
Cannabis produces over 100 different cannabinoid compounds. Most are present in trace amounts. Here are the ones that matter most for consumers:
THC (Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol)
The primary psychoactive compound in cannabis. THC binds to CB1 receptors in the brain, producing the "high" associated with cannabis use: euphoria, altered perception of time, relaxation, heightened sensory experience, and appetite stimulation. Effects are dose-dependent. At low doses (2.5-5mg), THC tends to produce mild relaxation and mood elevation. At higher doses, effects intensify and can include anxiety or paranoia in sensitive individuals. THC is the compound listed as a percentage on every cannabis product label.
CBD (Cannabidiol)
The second most abundant cannabinoid. CBD is non-psychoactive, meaning it does not produce a high. It modulates the endocannabinoid system indirectly and has been studied for its potential effects on anxiety, inflammation, seizures, and pain. Epidiolex, a CBD-based pharmaceutical, was FDA-approved in 2018 for the treatment of severe forms of epilepsy. CBD can also moderate the effects of THC, reducing anxiety and paranoia when used together.
CBN (Cannabinol)
CBN is not produced directly by the plant. It forms when THC degrades over time through exposure to heat, light, and oxygen. CBN is mildly psychoactive and is associated with sedative effects. Older cannabis that has been stored for extended periods tends to have higher CBN levels, which is why aged flower is sometimes associated with sleepiness.
CBG (Cannabigerol)
Known as the "parent cannabinoid" because CBGA (its acidic form) is the precursor from which all other cannabinoids are synthesized by the plant. CBG itself is non-psychoactive and present in small quantities in most cannabis strains. It's being researched for potential anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties. Some cultivators now breed CBG-dominant strains specifically for this cannabinoid.
THCV (Tetrahydrocannabivarin)
A lesser-known cannabinoid that has attracted attention for its unique effect on appetite. Unlike THC, which stimulates appetite (the "munchies"), THCV may suppress appetite at lower doses. At higher doses, it can be mildly psychoactive with a shorter duration than THC. THCV is most commonly found in African sativa landrace strains.
Terpenes: The Flavor and Effect Drivers
Terpenes are aromatic compounds produced by cannabis (and thousands of other plants). They're responsible for the smell and flavor of different strains, and they play a significant role in shaping the effects of cannabis. This is sometimes called the entourage effect: the theory that cannabinoids and terpenes work together to produce effects that are greater than any single compound alone.
Here are the eight most common terpenes in cannabis:
- Myrcene: Earthy, musky, herbal. Also found in mangoes and hops. The most abundant terpene in most cannabis strains. Associated with relaxation and sedation. Strains high in myrcene tend to feel more physically calming.
- Limonene: Citrus, lemon, orange. Also found in citrus peels. Associated with mood elevation, stress relief, and anti-anxiety effects. Strains high in limonene tend to feel uplifting and energetic.
- Pinene: Pine, fresh, woody. Also found in pine needles and rosemary. The most common terpene in nature. Associated with alertness, memory retention, and bronchodilation (opening airways). May counteract some of THC's short-term memory effects.
- Caryophyllene: Spicy, peppery, woody. Also found in black pepper and cloves. Unique because it also binds to CB2 receptors, making it the only terpene known to directly interact with the endocannabinoid system. Associated with anti-inflammatory effects.
- Linalool: Floral, lavender, sweet. Also found in lavender. Associated with calming, anti-anxiety, and sedative effects. Strains high in linalool are often recommended for relaxation and sleep.
- Terpinolene: Herbal, floral, piney, slightly citrus. Found in lilacs, tea tree, and nutmeg. Less common than other terpenes. Associated with uplifting effects and is often found in sativa-leaning strains.
- Humulene: Earthy, woody, herbal. Also found in hops and coriander. Associated with appetite suppression and anti-inflammatory properties. Works synergistically with caryophyllene.
- Ocimene: Sweet, herbal, woody. Found in mint, parsley, and orchids. Less studied than other terpenes but associated with anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and decongestant effects.

Indica, Sativa, and Hybrid: Labels vs. Reality
You'll see every cannabis strain labeled as indica, sativa, or hybrid. Traditionally, indica is associated with relaxation and body effects, sativa with energy and cerebral effects, and hybrid with a mix of both. These labels are based on the plant's physical structure (indica plants are short and bushy; sativa plants are tall and thin), not on their chemical effects.
The reality is more nuanced. Modern cannabis genetics are so cross-bred that virtually every strain is a hybrid at the genetic level. Terpene profiles are a better predictor of how a strain will make you feel than the indica/sativa label. A "sativa" high in myrcene may feel more sedating than an "indica" high in limonene. Use the labels as a starting point, but pay attention to terpenes and cannabinoid ratios for a more accurate prediction of effects.
Reading Cannabis Labels
Every product sold at a licensed New Jersey dispensary includes a lab-tested label with standardized information. Here's what to look for:
- THC percentage: The concentration of THC by weight. Flower typically ranges from 15% to 30%+. Higher isn't always better.
- CBD percentage: Some strains have significant CBD content. A 1:1 THC:CBD ratio provides effects with less intensity.
- Terpene profile: Not all labels include this, but the best ones list dominant terpenes. This tells you more about effects than THC percentage alone.
- Batch number: Identifies the specific production batch for traceability.
- Serving size: For edibles and tinctures, the label specifies THC per serving and total THC per package.
- Harvest/production date: Freshness matters. Older products may have degraded THC (converted to CBN) and lost terpenes.
Growing Methods
How cannabis is grown affects its quality, terpene content, and price:
- Indoor: Grown in controlled environments with artificial lighting. Allows precise control over temperature, humidity, light cycles, and nutrients. Generally produces the most consistent, potent, and visually appealing flower. Also the most expensive to produce.
- Greenhouse: Uses natural sunlight supplemented by artificial lighting when needed. Offers a balance between environmental control and natural growing conditions. Often produces excellent terpene profiles due to the full spectrum of natural light.
- Outdoor: Grown in natural soil with natural sunlight. Lowest production cost. Quality varies significantly with climate and growing conditions. Can produce exceptional flower in the right environment.
Common Beginner Mistakes
Nearly every first-time cannabis user makes at least one of these mistakes. Avoid them and you'll have a much better experience:
- Too much too fast: The number one mistake. Start with 2.5-5mg of THC for edibles, or one small puff of flower. Wait. Assess. Then decide if you want more. You can always take more; you can't take less.
- Chasing THC percentage: A 30% THC strain is not "twice as good" as a 15% strain. Terpenes, growing conditions, cure quality, and your individual biology all affect the experience. Some of the best cannabis experiences come from moderate-THC strains with rich terpene profiles.
- Not drinking water: Cannabis causes dry mouth (cottonmouth). Hydrate before, during, and after use. This is simple but makes a meaningful difference in comfort.
